Can I import this pickup into Jamaica?

How Jamaica’s published pickup age limits relate to unladen weight, model year and the import permit process.

Short answer

Jamaica’s published pickup age limit depends partly on unladen weight. Pickups up to 1,500 kg are listed at six years, while pickups and other small trucks from 1,501 to 3,000 kg are listed at ten years.

The weight category changes the answer

The Jamaica Trade Board’s published age table separates pickup trucks by unladen weight. It lists pickups up to 1,500 kg at six years, and pickups or other small trucks from 1,501 to 3,000 kg at ten years.

That means a pickup’s badge or marketing category is not enough to answer whether it qualifies. You need the vehicle’s documented unladen weight and the model-year information accepted for the permit process.

Confirm how the model year is determined

The Trade Board policy explains that model year is determined using manufacturer information and, for some markets, accepted sources such as the Japanese Automobile Age Verification Manual or the registration index for vehicles manufactured in Great Britain.

Do not rely only on the year shown in a dealer advertisement. Compare the listing with the export certificate, VIN information and the authority’s current requirements before making a purchase decision.

Get the permit before shipping

The Trade Board and Jamaica Customs both state that a vehicle import licence or permit must be obtained before shipment. The vehicle may also require a pre-shipment inspection certificate, depending on the circumstances and country of export.

This page is a planning guide, not an approval. Confirm the current category, age calculation, documentation and fees with the Jamaica Trade Board or a licensed Customs Broker before you commit funds.

Eligibility is only the first decision

A pickup can meet an age rule and still be a poor purchase for your use. Before comparing prices, check service history, accident or flood evidence, parts availability, engine and transmission configuration, fuel requirements, diagnostic support and the cost of getting it road-ready.

That is where a vehicle decision page becomes more useful than a single calculator. The goal is to understand whether the vehicle is eligible, affordable to land and sensible to own.
